Earth Hour 2009 march-Swith off your lights for one hour

Earth Hour is an international event organised by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund), and held on the last Saturday of March each year, which asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. Earth hour was conceived by WWF Australia and the Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights.[1] Following Sydney’s lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008.

People from 1500 cities across the world are turning off thier lights to vote for earth this time.

Earth Hour May See 1 Billion Turn Off Lights on march 28th,2009.

Earth Hour will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 8:30 pm, local time.Earth Hour 2009 is from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time, 2009-03-28. Currently, 82 countries and more than 2100 cities are ‘committed to Earth Hour 2009’, a huge increase from people participating in 35 countries for Earth Hour 2008.[4] 1 billion ‘votes’ is the stated aim for Earth Hour 2009[5], in the context of the pivotal 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference.

Among the participants this year is, for the first time, the United Nations building. The U.N. conservatively estimates that its participation will save $102 in energy.

Earth Hour, an event created in Sydney two years ago at 7.30 pm,march 2007  by environmentalists keen to cut energy use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In Sydney, Australia, the end of Earth Hour was celebrated with a fireworks show.

Google

Earth Hour has also received free publicity from the Google corporation. From 12:00 a.m. on March 29, 2008 until the end of Earth Hour, the Google homepage in the United States, Colombia, Canada, Denmark, Ireland and the UK was turned to a black background. Their tagline is, “We’ve turned the lights out. Now it’s your turn – Earth Hour.” A common misconception is that having a black background on a web page reduces the power consumption of monitors; LCD monitors use a constant amount of power regardless of which colors are shown. This is not the case for Organic LED monitors, though they are not currently in popular use.

New iPod Touch faster than iPhone 3G

The second-generation iPod Touch uses a slightly faster processor than the iPhone 3G.

(Credit: Apple)Apple appears to have upped the processing speed of the iPod Touch in order to help it go after the portable-game market.

Touch Arcade reports that the applications processor inside the 2nd Generation iPod Touch unveiled in September is actually running faster than the processor inside the iPhone 3G, which runs at the same speed that the original iPhone and iPod Touch used. The new iPod Touch’s ARM-based processor is running at 532MHz, while the iPhone 3G’s processor runs at 412MHz.

A game developer interviewed by Touch Arcade noticed a huge difference in 3D-rendering speed as a result of the speed bump. As fondly from the “megahertz madness” days of the Intel-AMD competition in the PC, processor speed is not the only measure of performance, but it is an important one.

With the arrival of the App Store, Apple has been marketing the latest iPod Touch as a gaming device in its latest round of commercials, almost completely ignoring the fact that it’s a music and video player as well.

It seems that Apple has room to boost the clock speed of the processor to 620MHz, according to ARM’s specifications, but that requires striking a balance between performance and battery life.

Blogging from 25,000 feet

For an aviation geek like me, the simple act of flying is more then enough reason to get on a plane.

So when sassy airline Virgin America offered CNET the chance to test its new Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi service, I jumped at the chance. And yes, I’m writing this 25,000 feet or so (we’re still climbing) above the Northern California coast. We’re cruising on an hour-long demonstration flight out of the San Francisco International Airport.

dsc_0127_270x4034After passing 10,000 feet, I was able to find the sky-high Wi-Fi signal and create an account within minutes. The service works faster than I expected–not as quick as my cable Internet service at home but zippy nonetheless. Yahoo and CNET loaded relatively quickly, and CNET’s Kara Tsuboi was able to stream videos. I went straight to blogging, so I didn’t take much of an online tour, but it looks promising.

So far the service is available on one of Virgin America’s uber-hip Airbus A320 aircraft. That plane (registration N638VA, “My other ride is a spaceship”) will begin flying scheduled service on Thanksgiving Day. The service will be rolled out to the airline’s entire fleet by the second quarter of 2009.

Of course, the Wi-Fi service will cost you. You’ll pay $9.95 for flights of three hours or less and $12.95 for flights more than three hours. I think that’s a pretty fair price (particularly if you’re on a company expense account) for the privilege of browsing, chatting, and e-mailing while aloft.

The service is available through Aircell, which powers the in-flight Wi-Fi technology. Radio towers through the continental United States transmit EV-DO Rev A signals to the planes. Three antennas on the outside of the aircraft pick up the signal, which is then transmitted throughout the cabin.

Thankfully, cell phone service in the air is still an no-no due to FAA regulations. VoIP services also will be banned, but you will be able to text if you have a Wi-Fi-enabled cell phone. What’s more, Virgin America says it will not filter Web sites.

Google ‘Voice Search’ hands-on verdict: Awesome

The new voice-activated Google Mobile app for the iPhone is finally here. Whatever the reason for the delay, it was worth the wait. The search app knows when you bring the phone to your face to speak into it. It beeps, you talk, and it executes a Google search on what you said. (If you’re using a headset, you have to press a button. You can type in your queries, too, if you want.)

It is freakishly accurate. It’s not perfect, but it’s extremely good. Good enough to be used frequently, I’d say, although this review is based on only 15 minutes of experimentation.

I searched for names of people I knew, businesses nearby, airline information, and other miscellaneous data. The service bungled one nearby restaurant, but got everything else right. It uses the phone’s location data to narrow down results. Try searching for “sushi” and you’ll get your closest sushi restaurants at the top of your search results.

speech-results

The Google Mobile app gives you its answers in text, which makes for a very quick experience. If your result returns phone numbers, you can dial the phone by clicking on one. But if you’re driving in your car and need a quick connection, use Goog411 instead, which is a full voice-in, voice-out experience.

As others have noted, Google Mobile doesn’t let you do voice dialing from your own contact list. It’s frustrating to be able to search the entire Web with your voice but not be able to search your own phone. But it’s still a useful and very cool little service.

To get the app, go to this link or visit the iTunes Application Store and search for “Google Mobile App.” As I write this, the description for the page is old, but the app you get is the new one.

if you enjoy voice recognition technology, go and visit:

they offer text-to-voice conversion and vice-versa for your text and voice mail!
