SSC ADVANCED SUPPLIMENTARY EXAMS – 2009 TIME TABLE
Once under fire for not doing enough for its impoverished Indian child stars, the makers of “Slumdog Millionaire” said on Wednesday they had bought a flat for one of them whose Mumbai shanty home had been demolished.
Director Danny Boyle and producer Christian Colson flew into Mumbai after pictures of Azharuddin Ismail and Rubina Ali picking ACthrough the debris of their homes — torn down by the civic authorities as illegal — were splashed in the media.
Smiling and hugging the children, Boyle said a home had been bought for Ismail, 9, who played the character of Salim as a child. He added they would soon buy one for Ali as well, who plays the young Latika.
Boyle, who came under fire for not doing enough for the children who lived in squalor despite the film’s success, blamed the media for raising the families’ expectations.
“Inevitably, the tension and pressure is media generated,” he said, after greeting Ali and Ismail with a hug.
“They were given access to a world, an extraordinary and glamorous world, and they understandably want their lives to be completely transformed,” said Boyle.
“The homes are a concern. That is one of the reasons why we built the trust,” he said.
The “Jai Ho” trust, named after the film’s award-winning track, and set up by Boyle and Colson, is meant to pay for the education and basic living costs of Ismail and Ali until they turn 18.
Boyle, whose rags-to-riches romance about a poor Indian boy competing in a TV game show scooped eight Academy Awards earlier this year, said he was pushing the trust to find a place for Ali before the monsoon rains, due around June 10.
A director for the trust said the apartment for Ismail was “comfortable, in a good neighbourhood (and) near his school” and cost “upwards of 2 million rupees” ($42,000).
“We have been trying to accelerate the process of re-housing the families, and one of the reasons we set up the trust is to deal with emergencies like this,” said Colson.
Boyle and Colson last month also donated 500,000 pounds to a non-profit organisation to support a programme for children in a slum in central Mumbai, where the film was largely shot.
In February, the state housing authority said it would give the two children apartments, but the families have not heard from them, said Rafik Qureshi, Ali’s father.
“The kids have done such a good job. They haven’t got anything. See where the kids are staying,” he said.
Chops off his long locks for Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan
Shah Rukh Khan has chopped off his long mane. This ’short cut’ is for Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan. This is the shortest SRK has ever worn his hair.
Second-stage look
Hairdresser Dilshad is responsible for Shah Rukh’s new cut. It is believed that the actor will trim his hair shorter after a few days. Almost like a crew cut. According to a source, “His hair cut was done in three stages. He is sporting the second stage look and will further chop his hair shorter in a few days.”
In My Name Is Khan, Shah Rukh plays a character called Rizwan Khan, who suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome, a relatively milder form of autism.
Off to shoot
The first half of the film is based on a true story that happened to a couple and Karan Johar has bought the story rights from the couple. Shah Rukh will leave for Los Angeles in the second week of Dece- mber. The film will also be shot in New York in the next schedule.
Return of THE jodi
The film brings SRK and Kajol back together. Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan have so far starred together in the following films, all of which turned out to be hits â Baazigar (1993), Karan Arjun (1995), Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001).
He looks totally like a boy.i dont know whatever the reason but i always like him in his typical style and hair….c’mon we all have been used to that style for ages now and we are not gonna accept any change in a good thing so easily…might be the film requires it but stil
So this is not the final look? can’t wait to see him in a crew hair cut! He will be even more sexier. This film will be something else.
Indian commandos have blown a hole in the outer wall of the complex housing a Mumbai Jewish centre as the battle against the militants intensifies.
The building was cloaked with thick smoke after the blast, television pictures showed, as commandos engaged in what appeared to be a final offensive to free the hostages inside.
A commando team was dropped by helicopter on to the roof early this morning as the violence that has left at least 143 dead and hundreds injured moved into its third day.
The gunmen, thought to number between three and seven, are believed to be isolated on the third and fourth floor of the five-storey building. It is feared they are holding up to six hostages, including the rabbi and his wife.
There were also further explosions at the Taj Mahal hotel, one of the two luxury hotels seized by militants in the violence that began late on Wednesday night. Fresh assaults are underway in an attempt to flush out the remaining militants.
Gunmen in the hotel are thought to be using hostages as human shields on a darkened, upper floor where the power supply has been cut. Smoke was seen billowing from the roof.
At least one militant was believed to be inside the ballroom, security official ML Kumawat said.
The Indian army said two militants were killed at the Oberoi hotel – now said to be in the control of the Indian commandos – and a total of nine shot dead in the city. As many as 25 terrorists may have taken part in the assault.
The overall death toll is expected to rise further. Neville Bharucha, from the Parsi ambulance service, said bodies inside the hotel could not be recovered because terrorists were still at large.
“There are dead bodies in the old Taj building,” he said, as he stood outside the hotel. “They are all lying there, they are the guests. We can’t recover the bodies because of the terrorists. They are still holding human shields”
Near the Mumbai police commissioner’s office fresh fighting broke out. Two young schoolgirls died in the incident, according to hospital sources.
The mayhem has left the skyline of India’s financial capital smoking. Mumbai, a metropolis of 19 million people, has been reduced to a ghost town – with many international firms cancelling travel and closing offices.
World leaders were quick to condemn the attacks. The US president-elect, Barack Obama, vowed the US would work with “India and nations around the world to root out and destroy terrorist networks”.
Recently improved relations between Pakistan and India were under strain after the Indian prime minister, Manmohan Singh, pointed the finger of blame at “external forces”. He said New Delhi would “take up strongly” the use of neighbours’ territory to launch attacks on India.
India’s external affairs minister, Pranab Mukherjee, was more pointed: “According to preliminary information, some elements in Pakistan are responsible for Mumbai terror attacks,” he asserted. “Proof cannot be disclosed at this time.”
One captured militant was reported to be a Pakistani national. The accusations raised fears that the peace process between the two nuclear rivals would stall.
The Indian navy also intercepted two Pakistani merchant vessels off the coast of Gujarat. It is believed that some of the terrorists arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday night by boat, and the navy was last night searching for the ship that dropped them there.
Pakistan’s president, Asif Ali Zardari, condemned the attack as “detestable”. He has agreed to send the head of the country’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to India to share information on the attacks, following a request by Singh.
Two Scotland Yard officers were on their way to Mumbai to help the authorities. The Foreign Office said it was investigating claims that some of attackers were British-born Pakistanis.
It was clear that foreign targets, especially those from the US and UK, had been singled out. One of the first targets was the Cafe Leopold, a famous hangout popular with foreign tourists.
The attackers also picked off British and US citizens in the luxury hotels. Television pictures showed how bloody and brazen the attackers were: two men were shown shooting at random as they drove through streets in a stolen police jeep.
Many hotel guests simply barricaded themselves into their rooms and hoped for the best. Yasmin Wong, a CNN employee who was staying in the Taj, told the news network that she hid under her bed for several hours after she was awoken by gunfire. She said she received a phone call from the hotel telling her to turn her light off, put a wet towel by the door and stay in her room until she was told otherwise.
The Foreign Office confirmed that one Briton, 73-year-old Andreas Liveras, had died in the attack. A shipping tycoon, he was shot dead apparently moments after speaking to the BBC from a basement.
Two Australians, a Japanese woman, an Italian, and three Germans also died. But the majority of those killed were ordinary Indians as they boarded trains and ate meals. At least 315 people were injured.
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — The bombing and machine gun attacks in Mumbai demonstrates how terrorism has affected Asian nations hosting sporting tours and places the global future of cricket in jeopardy.
Pakistan, hit by a spate of bombings, will finish 2008 without playing a single cricket Test. Sri Lanka’s civil war involving the Tamil Tigers has been going for more than 25 years and shows no sign of abating.
Now, more than 119 people in Mumbai are dead in India’s worst terror attack, causing the England cricket team’s tour to be suspended and threatening a sport in a region containing four of the nine Test-playing nations.
“If the message (of terrorists) is accepted then the pressure will build up,” said Zakir Hussain Syed, a cricket columnist said of the latest terror attacks on Wednesday night. “For the masses, cricket is a recreational oxygen in the subcontinent. Not only is the sport keenly followed on television, people go in large numbers to see their stars in action live on the grounds.”
The other five countries with the International Cricket Council’s elite Test status – Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and West Indies – have recently demonstrated their reluctance to visit the subcontinent, and the future of the sport could be bleak if that continues.
Hundreds of people have died in Pakistan this year due to suicide bombings, forcing the ICC to postpone the biennial Champions Trophy – the second most prestigious limited-overs tournament after the World Cup – from September to a date still to be decided.
“You want cricket to be played in all parts of the world and that has been the problem with Pakistan, you haven’t been able to tour there because of the volatile country,” New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori said.
Vettori fears that Test cricket could be restricted to being played in only a few countries if the security situation doesn’t improve.
“If other countries start going down that road then there will only be three or four countries you can play,” he said. “You never really want to go down that road, so you leave it to the people who make those decisions. We’ve trusted them in the past and we’ll trust them in the future.”
The concerns have even forced the Pakistan Cricket Board to consider staging a series against India at a neutral venue in January.
Syed feels subcontinental nations should focus on ensuring they play each other at home, and forget about convincing non-Asian countries that the region is safe.
“The only way I see the game progressing in subcontinent is that at least the bilateral series between the subcontinent teams be played in the respective countries,” said Syed, who has also worked as a development manager for the Asian Cricket Council.
“India could send positive vibes by touring Pakistan in January.”
The terrorist attack has also caused the postponement in India of the inaugural Twenty20 Champions League tournament that involves the top five provincial teams in the world.
Australia opening batsman Matthew Hayden, who plays for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League and was due to compete in the Champions League, said if the tournament was cancelled that it would be a “huge loss” for international cricket.
“But the impact is minor compared with the social and economic impacts that it will have on India,” Hayden said.
Australia captain Ricky Ponting backed the event to be held elsewhere after Cricket Australia’s decision to stop all travel to India.
“It’s a horrible thing to have happened,” Ponting said. “Everyone who’s playing in the event or wants to see the event do well would like to see it go ahead, so if that means moving it to a different country then I guess I’d support that.”
Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland expected Mumbai’s terrorism attack to cause a similar tightening in security to that which followed the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
“Cricket will go on. It doesn’t mean that we will cut any corners in making decisions,” Sutherland said Friday. “Everything is going to be more rigorous. That’s what we saw in the world following 9-11 and that’s what is going to come as a consequence of this.
“Even putting aside cricket issues, security issues in India and for the Indian government and the Indian armed forces, the police, (are) going to take on a completely different sphere.”
Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam wants the cricket boards to get together to restore confidence, but acknowledges there is little it can do in the short term.
“It’s a matter beyond the control of respective cricket boards after what happened in Mumbai,” he said.
Former Sri Lanka captain Hashan Tillakaratne has a similarly forlorn outlook on the sport’s future.
“Pakistan is already struggling without tours and India has had to cancel two tournaments,” Tillakaratne said. “With these bombings, cricket may come to a standstill.”
A Wal-Mart worker was killed Friday when “out-of-control” shoppers desperate for bargains broke down the doors at a 5 a.m. sale. Other workers were trampled as they tried to rescue the man, and customers shouted angrily and kept shopping when store officials said they were closing because of the death, police and witnesses said.
At least four other people, including a woman who was eight months pregnant, were taken to hospitals for observation or minor injuries, and the store in Valley Stream on Long Island closed for several hours before reopening.
Shoppers stepped over the man on the ground and streamed into the store. When told to leave, they complained that they had been in line since Thursday morning.
Nassau police said about 2,000 people were gathered outside the store doors at the mall about 20 miles east of Manhattan. The impatient crowd knocked the man, identified by police as Jdimytai Damour of Queens, to the ground as he opened the doors, leaving a metal portion of the frame crumpled like an accordion.
“This crowd was out of control,” said Nassau police spokesman Lt. Michael Fleming. He described the scene as “utter chaos.”
Dozens of store employees trying to fight their way out to help Damour were also getting trampled by the crowd, Fleming said.
Items on sale at the store included a Samsung 50-inch Plasma HDTV for $798, a Bissel Compact Upright Vacuum for $28, a Samsung 10.2 megapixel digital camera for $69 and DVDs such as “The Incredible Hulk” for $9.
Damour, 34, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 6 a.m., police said. The exact cause of death has not been determined.
A 28-year-old pregnant woman was taken to a hospital, where she and the baby were reported to be OK, said police Sgt. Anthony Repalone.
Police said criminal charges were possible in the case, but Fleming said it would be difficult to identify individual shoppers. Authorities were reviewing surveillance video.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc., based in Bentonville, Ark., called the incident a “tragic situation” and said the employee came from a temporary agency and was doing maintenance work at the store.
“The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority,” said Dan Fogleman, a company spokesman. “At this point, facts are still being assembled and we are working closely with the Nassau County Police as they investigate what occurred.”
Kimberly Cribbs, who witnessed the stampede, said shoppers were acting like “savages.”
“When they were saying they had to leave, that an employee got killed, people were yelling ‘I’ve been on line since yesterday morning,’” she said. “They kept shopping.”
Shoppers around the country line up early outside stores on the day after Thanksgiving in the annual bargain-hunting ritual known as Black Friday. It got that name because it has historically been the day when stores broke into profitability for the full year.
Dibakar Bannerjee, won millions of hearts and received worldwide appreciation for his first movie, ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’. So his next venture was eagerly awaited by comedy lovers as well as lovers of quality cinema. His present offering showed good vibes with its promos and catchy theme of life of a famous thief. But surprisingly, Dibakar chooses to go with a Documentary film-making style in “OLLO”. The movie is like a biography of a thief, an account of his childhood and youth, about his various relationships and how he manages to escape each time he is caught by the police.
Dibakar, though not Punjabi by birth, does has a soft corner about Sikhs and Punjabi culture. His first movie had a Punjabi culture feel allover and the same is more evident in this one two. In fact in OLLO he even casts a teenage Sikh boy to play the role of young Lucky. The movie opens with the childhood of lucky. The boy (young Lucky) is well chosen and shows great confidence. It never seems to be his first movie as he is so convincing in his act. The opening scenes between him and Paresh Rawal (his father) are a treat to watch. In simple words this part of the movie showing his start as a thief, his teenage love and fights is the best portion of the movie.
After this section, enters Abhay Deol with his cute smile and cool attitude. Here I have to say that Abhay is one of the most under-rated actors Bollywood has. His choice of films clearly shows his class cinematic thought process and he deserves praises for that. As Lucky he just floats calmly and impressively in the skin of a famous thief. He again gives a superlative performance as the famous conman of Delhi. Paresh Rawal in a triple role is competent but sadly has very less comic scenes. His best shows in his role of a Vet doctor who becomes partner with lucky for opening a new restaurant. Neetu Chandra is also impressive with her subtle persona. Archana Puran Singh shows excellent timing for which she is known for. Another worth mentioning act comes from the actor who plays Lucky’s close friend. He is top rate and also gets excellent one liners which entertain the most.
But despite having talented actors, brilliant performances and bright direction, the film lacks on the part of entertainment. The movie only tells you the story of a thief, but doesn’t entertain the viewer. It doesn’t have fast unexpected turns in the story. The narration gets repetitive post interval and you know what is going to happen next. Though portrayed as a comedy, the movie doesn’t have enough comic scenes. The funny chemistry is missing which was strongly there in “Khosla Ka Ghosla”. While watching it, you can smile at certain scenes but a hearty laughter would be difficult.
Dibakar sticks to his choice of realistic topics, having real life inspirations and also again selects Delhi for his backdrop of the story. Its nice to see that atleast he is deriving inspiration from the real life happenings around him and not copying ideas from the English flicks. His present idea of a movie on a famous conman was also interesting and had potential of becoming an interesting movie. Sadly it only remains interesting to a certain section and lacks the expected entertainment factor, which goes against the movie.
Instead of coming out as an entertaining movie on robberies and chases, OLLO is more like a docu-drama on the life of a famous thief. There is a very limited section of viewers who will find it good enough. People in Delhi Punjab and North territory can relate to it in a better way. Dibaker is surely a director to watch out for and I am waiting for what he plans next. He also knows one thing for sure and that is not to put any song in the script if not needed. So this is another song-less movie from him, which is intelligent on his part. But one thing I would surely like to request to our film-makers here – Do give a worth watching role to Abhay Deol, the boy has got a hidden talent to explore.
So to end, “Oye Lucky Lucky Oye” is an interesting movie with a touch of difference but don’t expect a great comedy out of it.

Amitabh Bachchan has pulled out his revolver many a times on screen. This time he has pulled out the revolver again, but not to shoot anyone on screen but to defend himself and have a safe sleep. He says, ‘Last night, as the events of the terror attack unfolded in front of me I did something for the first time and one that I had hoped never ever to be in a situation to do. Before retiring for the night, I pulled out my licensed .32 revolver, loaded it and put it under my pillow. For a very disturbed sleep,’ the megastar wrote on his blog.
‘My pain has been the sight and plight of my innocent and vulnerable and completely insecure countrymen, facing the wrath of this terror attack. And my anger has been at the ineptitude of the authorities that have been ordained to look after us,’ Big B expressed in his blog.
He further says, He salutes people who have laid down their lives for us. ‘I can only but salute them and respect their sincerity in the call of duty.’
Bachchan was disgruntled over the cliche ’spirit of Mumbai’ which he said people were using to cover the traumatic experiences that the merry city underwent in recent years. Bachchan says he bows over this and wishes the spirit never ends. We too agree with you Mr. Bachchan.
Sleeping with a loaded gun under the pillow is a very dangerous thing to do. Even with utmost precaution accidents do happen. I pray to God that the gun does not go off accidentally. Otherwise a national embarrassment will turn into a national martyr. Years ago one accidental hit in the stomach (and Indira Gandhi) erased his poor track record and turned him into a star, and now it seems Big B is trying is erase his shoddy legacy and flop status, and turn into a national martyr. Poor Big B is always looking for short cuts, genuine hard work is an alien concept to him.
Taking the decidedly uncomfortable premise of a man hooking up with his brother’s girl, Sorry Bhai is a brave little film that puts a fresh spin on the tale. Bumbling younger brother Sharman Joshi arrives in Mauritius with his parents Shabana Azmi and Boman Irani to attend elder brother Sanjay Suri’s wedding, and ends up falling in love with his brother’s fiancée Chitrangada Singh.
The triangle that ensues involves Sharman, Chitrangada and – no, not Sanjay who seems to wisely move on – but the boys’ overbearing mother Shabana who gets herself irreparably entangled in this awkward mess.
At the very core of Sorry Bhai’s drama is the magnificent Shabana Azmi who takes her role and immediately sinks her teeth into it, constructing a character that is all flesh-and-blood. From the little moments – like the one in which she follows Sharman and Chitrangada into the woods, only to hurt her foot before she can confirm her suspicions – to the significant ones (which include her clashes with her daughter-in-law to be), Shabana is always on the ball, and makes her character omnipresent in the movie, even when she’s not physically around in every frame.
A word of praise also for the immensely gifted Boman Irani who has a tougher job at hand – making a solid believable person out of what was probably a three-line character sketch on paper. Boman adds the right comic touch and just the perfect hint of melancholy to create an affectionate lug of a father who speaks less but delivers gems every time he does.
The plot of Sorry Bhai may be simplistic, but the film is not so much about the plot as it is about the characters, and director Onir does a fine job of writing complex, flawed characters who don’t come with any easy answers. Chitrangada’s character, for one, is a tough nut to crack – why does she appear almost unaffected when Sanjay puts off their wedding to attend to a pressing business commitment; why does she suddenly decide to pursue Sharman with such dogged determination; does she really feel no responsibility to Sanjay for what’s just happened? These are important questions all, but the answers are hard to find. Much like life, if you think about it.
Of the three leads, Sharman Joshi plays his part with such sincerity, you’re willing to look at his flawed character with renewed sympathy. The radiant Chitrangada Singh is awkward in places, but puts up a good show nevertheless, especially in her scenes with Shabana. Sanjay Suri, despite the weak characterisation, does the best he can with his role, in particular nailing the film’s one defining scene in which Sharman makes the big confession, to which he responds with shock, anger, and even a little affection.
Sorry Bhai is not devoid of faults – the film occasionally gets too talkie, and in some places a little silly too – but the film’s real charm lies in those memorable moments the director creates between his two favorite players – Shabana and Chitrangada. That’s the reason to watch this film.
I’m going with three out of five for director Onir’s Sorry Bhai. It’s a strong character-driven drama about imperfect people trying to find their own happiness in the world. Don’t miss it.
Did some Mumbai locals provide support to the Pakistani terrorists? Azam Amir Kasab, the only Pakistani terrorist nabbed alive, has revealed names and addresses of at least five people from the city who helped the terror operation.
AZAM AMIR KASAV…THE ONLY TERRORIST THAT SURVIVED
Sources said that help like, providing shelter, taking them around and showing places, passing information on police stations and nakabandhis were given by these locals. Joint commissioner of police (crime) Rakesh Maria said,”We suspect there could be local assistants but it is subject to verification. It will be very premature to comment on this at this stage as our investigations is going on.”
Kasab has told police that they were sent with a specific mission of targeting Israelis to avenge atrocities on Palestinians. This was why they targetted Nariman House, a complex meant for Israelis. Sources said Kasab’s colleagues killed in the operation had stayed in Nariman House earlier.
“They have stayed in Nariman house on rental basis identifying themselves as Malaysian students.” said a source. Police are trying to find out how Nariman House rooms were given to non-Jews. Police has taken all the records books of for verification. The second target was the CST railway station because casualties would be high.
Crime branch has also recovered several fake identity and credit cards from the belongings of dead terrorists. “All the cards are in different names and of different banks. Now we are at least trying to figure out how they procured credit cards from various banks.” said Maria. The recovery of so many cards with different names have led Mumbai police to suspect the involvement of ISI.
Though Maria maintained only 10 terrorists had sneaked in, the two blasts in taxis in Wadi Bunder and Vile Parle have led the police to believe there could be possibility of the presence of another two or more terrorists in the city.
Azam Amir Kasav
aka: Mohammad Ajmal Mohammed Amin Kasab
Azam Amir Kasav is the only terrorist from the Mumbai terror attacks that survived. He was captured and has been interrogated, providing a great deal of information about the attacks.
Azam Amir Kasav, also known as Mohammad Ajmal Mohammed Amin Kasab, looked confident in the photo above. It was taken as he walked into the Mumbai train station (CST) with the intent of killing as many people as he could. He and his partner finished their business at the station and moved on to their next target, Girgaum Chowpatty. They were stopped and engaged in a gun fight by police. Azam killed assistant police inspector Tukaram Umbale before he was shot. His partner was shot and killed during the gun battle. Azam played dead and the bodies of both men were picked up to be transported to the hospital. At some point, the police realized that Azam was breathing.
When the 21-year-old Azam arrived at the hospital he begged the medical staff there to help him. He told them that he didn’t want to die. It turned out that he was fluent in English and from from tehsil Gipalpura in Faridkot in Pakistan. He begged for his own life after indiscriminately taking the lives of whoever happened to be in the train station that morning.
After Azam’s bullet wound was treated, he was taken away by interrogators. Its reported that at first he was tight lipped, but it didn’t take long for intense questioning to loosen him up. Apparently, he has given investigators some vital information about the planning of the Mumbai attacks. He has told investigators that their plan was to blow up the Taj Hotel and they had enough explosives to do it. They wanted to create an Indian 9/11.
Home Minister Shivraj Patil, under tremendous criticism over a spate of terrorist attacks in the country since last year, resigned on Sunday in the wake of the Mumbai Terror strikes.
Patil, who had offered to step down at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting last night, sent his resignation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh this morning, sources said.
The 74-year-old Patil was inducted into the Union Cabinet despite his defeat from Latur in Maharashtra in the 2004 Lok Sabha polls and has been a target of the opposition as also the detractors within the party over his handling of the internal security situation in the country.
Patil had told the CWC meeting that as the Home minister he “takes the responsibility and whatever the CWC decides, I am ready to do”, the sources said.
Patil’s remarks came in the wake of criticism by several leaders, including Union Ministers P Chidambaram, Kamal Nath, Kapil Sibal and H R Bhardwaj, they said.
The refrain of these leaders at the meeting was that a strong action is needed in the wake of the Mumbai terror strikes and accountability has to be ensured at the higher as well as lower levels.
Patil, who has been in public life for over four decades, was brought into the Manmohan Singh Cabinet as he was considered a complete Gandhi loyalist and Sonia Gandhi had turned down repeated demands for his ouster from the government.
Patil was also one of the serious candidates of the Congress for the post of the President last year after the tenure of A P J Abdul Kalam got over. But, the Left parties, which were supporting the Government from outside, had put their foot down on such a proposal.
Besides Patil, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who was also present at the meeting, came under attack on the terror strikes issue, CWC sources said.
The leaders who voiced criticism on the issue included union ministers P Chidambaram, Kamal Nath, Kapil Sibal and H R Bhardwaj, they said.
The refrain of these leaders at the meeting was that strong action is needed in the wake of the Mumbai terror strikes and accountability has to be ensured at the higher as well as lower levels.
This prompted Pranab Mukherjee to remark that since it was collective responsibility of the Cabinet, he would also like to take responsibility as the External Affairs Minister.
Maharashtra Chief Minister, however, chose to ignore the criticism and instead apprised the meeting of the steps taken by his government in the wake of terror strikes, they said.
The Home Minister as also National Security Adviser M K Narayanan came under attack at the CWC meeting called hours after the security operations against the terrorists was indication enough that the leadership was planning some strong steps.
In the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks, the question that everyone is asking is ‘Why’. India already claims it has evidence of Pakistani hand. On Friday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had made a stern call to Pakistan and had asked them to send the head of its intelligence agency, the ISI, to India. However, Pakistan has refused to do the same.
But is it a bit too soon to jump to conclusions? In an attempt to get some answers, we speak to Lahore-based journalist Ahmed Rashid, an expert on South and Central Asia who authored bestsellers such as Jihad, Taliban and Descent into Chaos. He tells Forbes Network 18’s Dinesh Narayanan on phone from Rome that the attacks are a conspiracy to drive a wedge between the two neighbours. Excerpts from the interview:
QUES: Do you think the attack on Mumbai was planned to de-stabilise the conciliatory efforts of the Indian and Pakistani governments?
Ahmed Rashid: I think the attacks were strategically planned by al-Qaeda through the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants they train. It is trying to work out a space for itself in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). They have been hurting very badly in there because of pressure from the Pakistani army and US missile attacks.
QUES: What is the objective?
Ahmed Rashid: It is a military strategic objective to get the army out of Bajour and stop the US from stepping in. If tensions between India and Pakistan escalate, the army will be moved to the Indian border, as happened in 2002. After the attacks on the Parliament House in Delhi, India built up troops on the border. Pakistan responded by moving its army from the Afghanistan border to the Indian one. And al-Qaeda had a free run of FATA. They are looking to repeat the exercise.
QUES: Do you think they are likely to succeed?
Ahmed Rashid: The danger is the escalation of India-Pakistan accusations. They should not fall into the al-Qaeda trap. The Indian Government has already jumped the gun a bit. It is a weak government and is under pressure to do something.
QUES: What would happen if the Indian and Pakistani governments see through the trap?
Ahmed Rashid: Then there will be more attacks in Pakistan. This is a very critical period for al-Qaeda. It has only a few months. The US is preparing to send 20,000 troops into Afghanistan by April. The al-Qaeda is under tremendous pressure. They need to do something.
QUES: Will the new government in Pakistan be able to genuinely change the relationship with India?
Ahmed Rashid: It is a weak civilian government, just like the Indian Government. It is a Government that is besieged by a collapsing economy and tensions with the army. But it has its heart in the right place. The army needs to come under a democratic government for the outlook on national security to change.

Maharastra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil, who was in the cross hairs in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, resigned on 1 December.
“We have taken our own decision. It is for them to take their decision,” the NCP supremo said when asked whether the chief minister, who belongs to Congress, had also quit.
A Congress leader, who declined to be named, said if either the CM or the deputy CM goes, “the other will have to go because the issue is the same”.
A beleaguered Deshmukh landed himself in a fresh controversy yesterday as he visited the terror-hit Taj Mahal hotel along with film producer Ram Gopal Varma and Deshmukh’s actor son Reitesh.
The issue was raised at the all-party meeting convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last night which was also attended by Sonia Gandhi with some parties criticising the CM for his “casual” attitude.
Deshmukh recently completed four years in office. The names of union ministers Prithviraj Chavan and Sushil Kumar Shinde are doing the rounds to replace the chief minister and sources say a decision on the successor’s name was delaying Deshmukh’s resignation.
“I have submitted my resignation letter to Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. I have gone by my conscience and decided to take this step,” Patil told PTI.
“I pondered over the issue the whole night yesterday. Finally, I have decided to quit as per my conscience,“ Patil said.
Patil’s resignation follows the exit of the Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who put in his papers to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday, after the Congress Working Committee spoke disapprovingly of the Home Minister, in light of the Mumbai carnage and other terror strikes in the country.
The Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, who was also in charge of the state Home Ministry, was under severe criticism following the terror attacks with opposition Shiv Sena and BJP demanding his resignation alleging that he failed to handle the situation.
Patil belongs to the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party and hails from Sangli district in western Maharashtra.
Who are these people? Patils, Modis, Thackereys, Deshmukhs etc etc. We need a tough person to lead the state and country at this time, someone who stands tall and proud under extreme pressure and give it back as good as it gets. Someone like Kiran Bedi or KPS Gill should be the home minister and not these next to nothing politicians who are just crooks and know only how to divide India on the basis of region or religion..
The problem will not be solved tendering resignation by RR Patil. Mere resignations/change of guards will not solve the problem. They should be made held accountable for the present chaos. In my opinion, the best solution at present is, that President should dismiss the present Government and put the state under President’s rule and hand over the Mumbai City administration to security forces with clear mandate to hunt down the terrorists and their local sympathizers, if any. I am tired of seeing people shouting and screeming in front of the TV cameras and bashing the politicians. Who is responsible for these chaotic conditions? We the people are responsible for having elected such leaders. Now the time has come that people should think and collectively force the Government to bring changes in the People’s Representation Act according to the present requirement and make the politicians accountable for their misdeeds.
Politicians like these selfish people should be Shutdown
‘If terrorists are showering their bombs of violence, let’s reciprocate with roses of love in thousands and more’, says Aamir Khan.
It’s been a black week all throughout the globe with various locations of Mumbai stuck in terror. Mumbai ? The commercial capital of India turning into a War Zone has broken down the hearts of ours and Aamir Khan seems to be more desperate. Remember this! The actor has been more keen on his words ‘If terrorists are showering their bombs of violence, let’s reciprocate with roses of love in thousands and more’.
Bollywood Star seems to have been undergoing insomniac ever since last night as he has got his eyes fixed on news channels. In his blog, Aamir has penned the following statements
“My heartfelt condolences to the families of persons killed and taken hostage. I was feeling sick in the stomach when the fire broke out at the Taj. What would the people caught inside be going through. The fire fighters were doing their best but my imagination was running wild and I was feeling helpless watching other people trapped in the rooms adjoining the fire.
My heartfelt condolences to the family of the brave officers of the Mumbai Police who lost their lives leading from the front to take on these terrorists. Especially Hemant Karkare of the ATS who in the recent past was being targeted by various political parties for the work that he was doing. When will these politicians realize and admit that terrorists HAVE NO RELIGION. Terrorists are not Hindu or Muslim or Christian. They are not people of religion or God. They are people who have gone totally sick in their head and have to be dealt with in that manner. Hemant Karkare is an example of a brave officer who gave his life in the line of duty.
At this moment I pray that the brave officers of the Mumbai Police, the Indian Army, Navy, the NSG and the various other security forces dealing with the situation are able to end this crisis as soon as possible.
If it had just been a matter of simply fighting the terrorists the security forces would have dealt with it sooner, but here of course the situation is extremely complicated with many innocent lives at stake. The fact that the locations are huge hotels with multiple floors, hundreds of rooms, many corridors, staff quarters, work spaces, entries, exits etc, and have innocent guests still in there, have made the task very difficult and delicate.
I dread to think of how various political parties are now going to try and use this tragedy to further their political careers. At least now they should learn to not divide people and instead become responsible leaders. An incident such as this really exposes how ill-equipped we are as a society as far as proper leaders go. We desperately need young, dynamic, honest, intelligent and upright leaders, who actually care for the country”.
The English cricket team is set to come back to India later this week for the two-Test series starting Dec 11, the media reported here Monday.
According to a report in The Guardian, the team is expected to be back in India either Thursday or Friday to fulfil their engagement. England had cut short their visit and cancelled the two one-dayers after the Mumbai attacks.
The matches are likely to take place in Ahmedabad and Chennai, which was selected in place of Mumbai after the terror attacks in the city.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will present the players with a safety report Monday and the resumption of the tour is likely to be officially confirmed Tuesday.
The daily also reported that ECB is in touch with the Indian and British governments, consulates in Indian cities, security advisers and other risk assessment experts in order to give the cricketers a thorough dossier on safety issues.
The ECB has also spoken to the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA).
But England team could be without some of their biggest names — Andrew Flintoff, Steve Harmison and Jimmy Anderson.
Lalit Modi, vice-president of the Indian cricket board, suggested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would not press for compensation if England remained at home.
‘I really do believe that it (the tour) will happen. It’s just that we need to take it to another city, which we’ve agreed to do. We can’t allow events around the world to deter us, to be afraid to play,’ Modi was quoted as saying by the media
An eight-year-old has died after she fell unconscious on being allegedly slapped by the school teacher.
The alleged death of Iftesham, a school student in Kolkata has caused widespread outrage.
The school says that it has taken action against the teacher who has been accused of slapping the child and causing her death.
Angry parents outside the Vidya Bharati School in Kolkata demand answers. The death of the girl has brought them out on to the streets. They demand that the teacher, Anita Das, be punished.
“We also want punishment for the errant teacher. She has brought disgrace not only to our school but also to the entire teaching community,” said Anjana Mallick, the Principal of Bidya Bharati School.
Doctors say Iftesham sustained a serious head injury from the slap. Although a blood clot in her brain was removed it, it was too late to save the little girl.
One of the child’s classmate said, “Our Yoga teacher slapped Iftesham and then she fainted. Two of our teachers immediately removed her from class. They later told us that Iftesham had to be admitted in hospital.”
The school has now terminated the accused teacher’s contract. But the victim’s mother is inconsolable.
Nazreen Chowdhury, Iftesham’s mother said, “I want to meet the teacher and ask her what wrong could my child have done that she had to be killed.”
Police have registered a case of death due to negligence against the yoga teacher. She is absconding and is yet to be arrested.
There was panic in Hyderabad after a former SIMI activist Waqar Ahmed, an accused in the Mecca Masjid blast case, opened fire on a police team at Santhoshnagar Cross Roads today afternoon. A team of anti-insurgency force was dispatched there to check the information. i wonder if police are now being attacked far more… everyday we hear of the death of officers like mr karkare, ashok kamte and others, who die by the motivated mujahideen. some officers are beaten by the public venting their anger on them. they are beaten because they pick up people for breaking the law and the like. i even wonder if they are properly dressed. i recently saw a constable wearing kolhapuri chappals. god forbid they are chasing someone and there is alive wire, they would be shocked on the job…as electricity travels fastest through these footwear. ideally they shoudl wear rubber chappals so that they are safe even if overhead wires break, or they accidentally step ona wet live wire. i firmly feel that superiors should look into increased violence on the police force dress them appropriately for duty and look after them if they receive burns or wounds while on duty. they require good nurses to look after them and inject them with proper medicines.
Shah Rukh Khan has spoken for the first time about his thoughts on the Mumbai atrocities. Speaking exclusively to Raj and Pablo for this Saturday’s (6 December) ‘Love Bollywood’ Show on BBC Asian Network, Shah Rukh speaks openly about why he hasn’t talked about the attacks till now as well as his views on what the younger generation of Muslims should be concentrating on.
Shah Rukh said “I’ve tried to keep away from commenting on this as there are no words to express a situation like this because our feelings are mixed with anger, disbelief and sadness.”
In light of the horrific attacks, Shah Rukh went on to give his thoughts on religion and the younger Muslim generation. “Being Muslim myself, I believe youngsters need to understand Islam and respect the religion in the right way. It’s such a huge waste and my appeal to all in these times and in recent years is that please can we run what we want in terms of politics, government, jobs and teaching our children with the prime motive of taking communalism out of it. I think no agenda should be attached to any kind of religion.”
Shah Rukh spoke passionately about his views on what he feels should be the only religion the nations’ children should follow – ‘work’; he goes on to say, “The religion our children are born with should be something they practice as a discipline and work should be developed as the new religion.”

the group had planned to sail out on Thursday. Their recruiters had even charted out the return route for them and stored it on the GPS device which they had used to navigate their way to the Mumbai shoreline. This suggests that the terrorists were willing to undertake a mission which they knew would be very risky, but not necessarily suicidal. Sources said that the bait of safe return must have been used by the recruiters to convince the wavering among the group to join the audacious plot against Mumbai. He says The bang hoped get away after attck from mumbai.Azam made another important disclosure: that all terrorists were trained in marine warfare along with the special course Daura-e-Shifa conducted by the Lashkar-e-Taiba in what at once transforms the nature of the planning from a routine terror strike and into a specialized raid by commandos.
The sole Mumbai gunman to be captured alive has claimed that his father introduced him to the Pakistan-based militant group suspected to be behind last week’s bloody attacks in exchange for cash.

Wearing a traditional black and gold Malay outfit (Baju Melayu and samping) and headgear, Khan received the title of “Datuk” (equivalent to British Knighthood) from the governor of Malaysia’s southern Malacca state.
Bollywood superstar ShahRukh Khan today became the first Indian actor to be conferred on a prestigious Malaysian title.
Wearing a traditional black and gold Malay outfit (Baju Melayu and samping) and headgear, Khan received the title of “Datuk” (equivalent to British Knighthood) from the governor of Malaysia’s southern Malacca state.
Baju Melayu is similar to a kurta pajama, while ’samping’ is a piece of cloth men tie around the waist and which falls to the length of the long shirt.
The 43-year-old actor, who has a large fan base among the Malays, held the estimated 1,000 guests at the investiture spellbound as he received the Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka (DMSM), conferred on him and 76 others.
The actor kept waving to his fans as he was escorted into the hall. The Bollywood icon was the focus of attention as media and fans clicked away using cameras from their seats.
The actor will be referred to as Datuk Shahrukh Khan in Malaysia and will be addressed as Datuk. Each Malaysian state chooses its own list of people to honour with “Datukship”. A majority of the awardees are local Malaysians who would have excelled in some area or are in the government.
Malacca authorities said Khan was given the title because some of his movies had been shot in the the historical state boosting tourism.
Khan shot a song for the movie ‘one two ka four’ in Malacca which was named as one of the heritage cities by Unesco a few months ago. However, the decision to award Khan with the Datukship received a fair share of criticism across the country with local artists and public noting that the award could have been given to a local actor or artist.

important Dates:
On December 13, 2008,The list of students and their allotted sections will be put up on the website, along with the time table for the students to start attending classes from December 17, 2008 and for VIII semester students from January 27, 2009.
Important Instructions
The following instructions need to be followed meticulously to avoid any confusion:
Students are advised to read the instruction given below before they proceed for the registration.
1. Detailed time table is given for the students to choose the section. The student must carefully choose the section based on the choices available
2. Once the student enters the registration menu, he/she chooses the courses followed by the faculty along with the section. While doing this, the student must choose the section already decided (step 1) and be consistent for other courses also.
While choosing the courses, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that not more than one course from a given set of choices is chosen, For example, an elective course is to be chosen from the following set of 3 courses:
BIOT804E16
BIOT804E10
BIOT804E12
The student can choose only one from the available choice. The common identification parameter is the code BIOT804. It is hence imperative that for all such possibilities, only one course from a set of courses having the common identification parameter can be chosen.
3. IV Semester B.Tech Industrial Biotech & MIBT: Students who studied III semester in Section A can choose only Microbiology (BIBDBT 401 and 403 only). This is because, such students have already completed Biochemistry and not eligible to choose Biochemistry (Theory & Lab).
4. Once the student completes the course selection, he /she finishes the registration process and can save or print a copy of the time table.
5. The student list and section allotted will also be displayed in the website from December 13, 2008.
The film industry and movie buffs are pinning their hopes on Shah Rukh Khan to deliver the next big hit of the year with the upcoming Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, the advance bookings of which have been “terrific”.
“The response for bookings is terrific,” said Sanjeev Kohli, director and CEO of Yash Raj Films, the production company behind the film.
According to a source from multiplex chain PVR, the bookings for “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, which has a running time of three hours and 46 minutes, are much better than the past few releases.
“The situation has been quite gloomy in the past weeks except for bookings for Dil Kabaddi’. So, we are looking forward to this film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. It might be a saviour in these times and be the next hit of this year,” the source said.
Most multiplexes like PVR and Satyam have reserved multiple auditoriums and time slots for the screening of the film and are receiving a positive response for advance bookings.
This, despite the fact that advance bookings opened for all theatres just Wednesday.
“We delayed the advance booking date to synchronize with the multiplex advance booking day, which is Wednesday,” Kohli explained.
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a story of a mismatched couple played by Shah Rukh Khan and newcomer Anushka Sharma who find true love in the backdrop of a dance competition.
It is being released worldwide at over 1,200 screens, including approximately 300 prints for the overseas market.
Apart from being Shah Rukh Khan’s first release this year, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is the first Shah Rukh Khan-Aditya Chopra combination film in over eight years. They had last collaborated for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1994 and for Mohabbatein in 2000.
Film critic Anupama Chopra says everyone has “great expectations” from this film.
“I am a fan of Aditya Chopra’s style of candyfloss and romantic movies. I hope Aditya and Shah Rukh Khan create the same magic that they did with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. It will be interesting to see them create another iconic figure with this film after they popularised Raj (Shah Rukh’s character in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge),” Anupama Chopra said over phone from Mumbai.
Though the production house has tried to keep the storyline of the film under wraps, it has constantly emphasised that the film is about an ordinary man.
Anupama Chopra says she is curious to see how Shah Rukh Khan, who has mostly essayed larger-than-life roles with a stylised persona, would be able to carry off the image of an everyday man.
“He has played that look in Chak De! India and Swades but Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a romantic film. I am very curious to know how he does in the film,” she said.
Two of the film’s songs “Haule haule” and “Chance pe dance” are already ruling the charts.
I just watched it came back.It was quit good.I absolutely loved it.
It’s a very simple story about an ordinary man Surinder Sahni [Shah Rukh Khan] trying to live an ordinary life, but his life takes a solid turn once he meets Taani(Anushka Sharma) and gets married to Taani due to some unexpected tragedy. They share a plutonic relationship but Suri starts loving Taani and expect her to notice his feelings some day. Taani decides to join a Dancing competition which motivates sure to change himself and join her as a different person. He takes help from his friend Bobby [Vinay Pathak], changes his looks and joins the class and become Dancing partner of Taani as Raj [Shah Rukh Khan]. Raj and Taani get along after some initial tussle and slowly Raj expresses his love to Taani. Story was simple but what’s makes it interesting is the way it’s been presented.
Obviously, Its Shah Rukh Khan’s performance. He again proves that he is the real king of Bollywood. He carried this film totally alone on his shoulders.
Anushka is a great dancer and she looks amazing in the songs.Haule Haule is my favourite song from this movie.Iam sure you will get laugh by watching this song. Its a very funny one.
And the song phir Milenge is also super song.Actually its a combo of old songs. There were Kajol,Priety Zinta,Rani Mukharjee,Bipasha and Lara Dutta dancing with Shahrukh in this song. The pair Srk-KAjol is better than rest of pairs, kajol was looking amazing where as Zinta was looking aged.
You will laugh even when there’s no comedy just by looking at him and watching him react to things and people around him. Shahrukh,OMG!!! He is getting more charismatic as day goes.Just look at those scenes where he feels shy whenever he see Taani(Anushka). He acted trmendously while he fighted with a Sumo Fighter in a Japanese type Exibition’s Competetion.Anushka Sharma who said its her first movie..watch her to believe me,she is amazing .Anushka is a great dancer and she looks amazing in the songs.Even she acted very well like a matured actress. Her debutance is better than Deepika PAdukone. Vinay Pathak was good where he plays the role of a friend of Surinder(Shahrukh).Songs are good.I wont say they are Super,But Salim-Sulaiman has done a splendid work.Overall a superb family entertainer.
But do not expect this film to be anything like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Mohabbatien which were previously Srk-Aditya’s combo movies. Its may be near the scale of DDLJ or Mohabbatein I think. The End credits with Srk dialouges at back ground, were very funny with pictures of Suri and Taani where they had toured in China.
Aditya Chopra deserves full credit for this film along with Shahrukh. His way of treating this film is good and touches ones heart at human level. He had power to make this film to look much big, but decided to keep it simple and straight which works in the favor of the film, though the treatment might look bit boring.
Go and watch it.No doubt you will enjoy this movie a lot.
Adtiya made Mohabbatein next, which was judged against DDLJ. I saw it twice, the second time to hear Shah Rukh Khan’s [Images] speech to Amitabh Bachchan [Images] in the film’s climax once again. Those words were among the finest penned lines I have heard in our cinema.
Eight years later, Aditya is back with Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.
It is an absolute triumph for him as the creator (writer and director) of the film. He takes the formula and turns it around on its head with a film that that is self parodying, self referential and absolutely refreshing.
The film sees SRK [Images] playing Surinder Sahni (Suri) a regular office-going guy, who lives a quiet life and married a girl Taani (Anuksha Sharma proves to be a good find), who had just lost the guy she wanted to marry.Obviously, she doesn’t love him. But he does, and decides to win her with an alter ego called Raj.
Yes, Raj is back!
But this Raj is totally unlike DDLJ’s Raj, who would never run away with the girl. This Raj is all for running away. He is Taani’s dance partner in a musical competition she participates in, by day and her husband Suri by night!
In DDLJ, Pardes and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai [Images], SRK was stealing the other guy’s girl. In this one, he is stealing her from himself!
The scene is set for an all-out entertainer, especially because Aditya and SRK have teamed up for this. They make a new age commonman hero in Suri, all the while poking fun at the flamboyant lovers SRK has played before. But these aren’t insider jokes, they are steeped in popular culture that we have grown up on. For example, there is a hilarious take off on Hrithik Roshan’s [Images] advertisement where he beats a bunch of baddies using a girl as a weapon. I won’t spoil your fun about the other movies Suri and Taani watch in the film, but trust me, you have seen them all!
One of the funniest moments is when Taani nods off in a boring commercial and dreams up a song sequence where Raj announces that if you are bored of regular romances, he has learned from ‘the baap’ of romances and unleashes a song featuring SRK’s favourite heroines.
RNBDJ ranks as one of SRK’s best performances till date, his finest moment being in the interval when Raj talks to Suri and he talks back!
Technically, production designer Muneesh Sappel does a great job.
One of the things you may notice is that Aditya, along with cinematographer Ravi K Chandran, have designed the pace of the film with a lot of long and tough steady cam shots, held together by expert performances. I say tough because the camera is never static, yet it moves at exactly the emotional point you would require it to move in close to the character or pull back.
Salim-Suleman have a blast with the music of the film, which infuses the traditional Yash Raj music with a new age tempo.
One of the big surprises in the film is that despite the film being set in Amritsar [Images], it doesn’t feature the assembly line family tree starting with Dara Singh playing the great grandfather and percolating down to every single niece-nephew, family dog and domestic help. RNBDJ has four leading players, SRK essaying two of them, Anushka [Images] and the brilliant Vinay Pathak as Bobby Khosla.
RNBDJ is an fun entertainer with some very wicked writing at work.
The Lashkar-e-Taiyba and the Jamaat-ud-Dawa might have disowned him, but the father of the lone Pakistani gunman arrested for the Mumbai terror attacks has admitted that the young man whose photograph was beamed by media across the world, is his son.
Amir Kasab, the father of Ajmal Amir Iman alias Ajmal Kasab, broke down as he made the admission to the influential Dawn newspaper in the courtyard of his house in Faridkot, a village of about 2,500 people in Okara district of Punjab province.
“I was in denial for the first couple of days, saying to myself it could not have been my son… Now I have accepted it. This is the truth. I have seen the picture in the newspaper. This is my son,” Amir said in his first interview to the media since his son’s arrest.
Britain’s Observer newspaper and the BBC had earlier reported that Kasab belonged to Faridkot and had joined the Lashker-e-Tayiba some time ago.
The Observer’s correspondent had located Kasab’s home and gotten hold of the voters’ roll which had the names of his parents Amir Kasab and Noor as well as the numbers on their national identity cards.
Reports had said that Kasab left home as a frustrated teenager about four years ago and went to Lahore in search of a job. After a brush with crime in that city, he reportedly joined the LeT.
Amir Kasab, a father of three sons and two daughters, said his son disappeared from home four years ago. “He had asked me for new clothes on Eid that I couldn’t provide him. He got angry and left,” he said.
As Amir talked to the Dawn’s correspondents, Kasab’s two sisters and a younger brother stood nearby. Their mother, wrapped in achador, lay on a nearby charpoy.
“Her trance was broken as the small picture of Kasab lying in a Mumbai hospital was shown around. They appeared to have identified their son. The mother shrunk back in her chador but the father said he had no problem in talking about the subject,” the newspaper reported.
Amir said he had settled in Faridkot after arriving from the nearby Haveli Lakha many years ago. He owned the house the family lived in and made a living by selling pakoras in the streets of the village.
He pointed to a hand-cart in one corner of the courtyard and said, “This is all I have. I shifted back to the village after doing the same job in Lahore. My eldest son, Afzal, is also back after a stint in Lahore. He is out working in the fields.”
Faridkot is located off a busy road and bears all the characteristics of a lower-middle class locality in a big city, the newspaper reported.
Amir said he has had little say in Kasab’s life since the day his son walked out on him. He calls the people who snatched his son from him his enemies, but has no clue who these enemies are, the paper reported.
Asked why he did not look for his son all this while, he said, “What could I do with the few resources that I had?”
Media reports had said that Kasab’s handlers had promised him that his family would be compensated with Rs 1,50,000 after the completion of the Mumbai mission.
Though mild-mannered, Amir became agitated at the mention of the link between his son’s actions and money. “I don’t sell my sons,” Amir said.

Just shoe do you think you are ... George W. Bush, inset, reacts after a journalist threw his shoes at him.
A journalist hurled two shoes at US President George W Bush on his farewell visit to Iraq on Sunday, highlighting hostility still felt toward the outgoing US leader who acknowledged that the war is still not won.
“This is the end!” shouted the protester, later identified as Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Al-Baghdadiya television, an Iraqi-owned station based in Cairo, Egypt.Muntazer al-Zaidi jumped up as Bush held a press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, shouted “It is the farewell kiss, you dog” and threw his footwear.
The president lowered his head and the first shoe hit the American and Iraqi flags behind the two leaders. The second was off target.
Zaidi, a reporter with the Al-Baghdadia channel which broadcasts from Cairo, was immediately wrestled to the ground by security guards and frogmarched from the room.
Soles of shoes are considered the ultimate insult in Arab culture.
After Saddam Hussein’s statue was toppled in Baghdad in April 2003, many onlookers beat the statue’s face with their soles.
Bush laughed off the incident, saying: “It doesn’t bother me. If you want the facts, it was a size 10 shoe that he threw.”
He later played down the incident. “I don’t know what the guy’s cause is… I didn’t feel the least bit threatened by it.”
Bush, on his fourth and final official trip to Iraq since he ordered the March 2003 invasion that toppled Saddam, admitted: “There is still more work to be done.”
As he and Maliki signed a security pact setting out new guidelines for US troops in Iraq, the president said: “The war is not over, but with the conclusion of these agreements… it is decisively on its way to being won.”
Earlier, Bush ventured out in a motorcade through Baghdad streets, the first time he has gone somewhere other than a military base or the heavily protected Green Zone.
Bush hands over the delicate task of overseeing the US withdrawal from Iraq in five weeks to Barack Obama, who has pledged to turn the page on the deeply unpopular war.
“I’m so grateful that I’ve had a chance to come back to Iraq before my presidency ends,” he said at a meeting with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.
Bush has staunchly defended the invasion that triggered years of deadly insurgency and sectarian violence that has killed tens of thousands of Iraqis and more than 4200 American troops.
It is not the first time it has happened for Yash Raj Films, but it has certainly happened the fastest. Barely a day had gone by post the release of RAB NE BANA DI JODI that the Oscar library had made a request for the script for its permanent collection. The sensitivity of the screenplay and the unusual love story attracted the attention of the staff at the library right away.
The scripts in the collection reside at the Margaret Herrick Library and are made accessible for research purposes only; students, filmmakers, writers and actors are among the regular patrons. Screenplays may only be viewed in the library; they do not circulate. Also, no screenplay is allowed to be photocopied.
The invitation is recognition that the screenplay of RAB NE BANA DI JODI stands out from the crowd – not just among Indian movies but movies released worldwide. As the movie goes from strength to strength at the box office, it is a tribute to the entire team whose passion, hard work and sheer creative onus, made the film such a refreshing change of pace for jaded audiences.
Three major undersea cables — the Sea Me We 4, Sea Me We3, and FLAG — were cut again in Mediterranean Sea,causing massive Internet outages.
The three Internet cables were cut off the coast of Sicily on Friday morning. Throughout Egypt, the Internet is almost completely down or working sporadically.
Because of this ,considerably slowing down India’s internet and voice traffic. The extent of the damage is still being assessed.Sources said that India net got 65% traffic since friday
France Telecom said Enginners were sent for cables repairing but it will take “several days” for cables to be repaired and is trying to switch Egypt’s Internet to an alternative route.
Undersea cables were also damaged in January, causing outages in the Mideast and India.
Yemen and Sudan were also having phone and Internet difficulties Friday because of he cable cut.
Fibres cut in recent years:
- January 20, 2007 – Due to Taiwan Earthquake
- January 30, 2008 – in Mediterranean Region
- Now December 19, 2008 again in Mediterranean Region
“Being a Saturday, we may not feel the full impact of the cuts. Though there’s no doubt that traffic has slowed down to a snail’s pace. Moreover, given the global slowdown, most companies themselves are going slow, and hence the impact may be lower. However, what is surprising is the regularity with which these cuts have been happening,” said Rajesh Chharia President, Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI), told Business Standard.
France Telecom said it immediately alerted one of the two maintenance boats based in the Mediterranean area, the “Raymond Croze”. In its initial assessment, the company listed 14 countries affected by the current problem. The Maldives are 100 per cent down, followed by India, which has 82 per cent disruption. Qatar, Djibouti and the UAE were the next most widely affected areas with about 70 per cent service interrupted. Disruptions for Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Pakistan range from 51 per cent to 55 per cent.
Impact on voice traffic:
- India: 82% out of service
- Saudi Arabia: 55% out of service
- Djibouti: 71% out of service
- Egypt: 52% out of service
- United Arab Emirates: 68% out of service
- Lebanon: 16% out of service
- Malaysia: 42% out of service
- Maldives: 100% out of service
- Pakistan: 51% out of service
- Qatar: 73% out of service
- Syria: 36% out of service
- Taiwan: 39% out of service
- Yemen: 38% out of service
- Zambia: 62% out of service
This has proved that Shahrukh is the Real King and King Khan of Bollywood
New York: Congress President Sonia Gandhi and film star Shah Rukh Khan find place among the ‘50 Most Powerful People of the World’ selected by American newsmagazine Newsweek.
US President-elect Barack Obama tops the list.
Chinese President Hu Jintao, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, German Chancellor Angela Markel, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and North Korean dictator Kim Jim Jong II are other world leaders on the list.
Newsweek has selected Sonia as the 17th most powerful leader and says Indian political scene is riven by factions, but the Congress remains the strongest national force and rules unchallenged. “In the world’s largest democracy, she is the queen.”
The magazine says Shah Rukh, who is No. 41 on the list, is the ‘King of Bollywood’.
“Who is the world’s biggest movie star? Brad? Will? Nah. His name isShah Rukh Khan, and he’s the king of Bollywood. It’s not just that his (Khan’s) romantic flicks make gazillions—it’s where those gazillions come from. Khan is huge in the Muslim world, even in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where the mullahs ban his films. Their main appeal is certainly the song-and-dance numbers, but Khan makes devoutly secular films where love trounces bigotry,” the magazine says.
Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Kayani, who controls the country’s nuclear weapons, is placed 20th on the list, which would be published in the January 2009 issue of the magazine.
Kayani, the mumbling and chain-smoking general, answers to President Asif Ali Zardari in theory, but he and his army remain the dominant power in Pakistan. “He’s responsible for Pakistan’s nukes; for the battle against al-Qaeda and its tribal allies along the Afghan border; and for managing tensions with neighbour India,” the magazine says.
Kayani, till now, has kept the army out of politics and seems focused on the battle against ‘jihadists’. “In the wake of the November terrorist attacks in Mumbai, Kayani stood firm on Pakistan’s sovereignty while also taking measures against the alleged sponsors of the outrage,” it says.
A surprise inclusion in the list, which the magazine admits is subjective, is Osama bin Laden, the “global terrorist.” He is No. 42 in the list.
The magazine says the presidency of Obama, the “intensely charismatic” Democrat, who will be inaugurated on January 20, will be judged on how he handles the economic crisis that now envelops the US and the world. “For Obama to be remembered as a great President, he has to do nothing less than rescue capitalism.”

SNAP 2008 has been moderately tough this year, there were a lot of surprises in this papers. To begin with even the question paper has two contradictory statements whether the student has to return the test booklet or keep it with himself(Refer Points 9 and 11).We have put forth the varous answer keys and analysis of various institutes below.
The students were allowed to take the papers home. For the last two years, only Analytical & Logical Reasoning section had questions of 2 marks each, but this year the marking scheme was quite different:
VA & RC section – 35 questions out of which 30 questions carried 1 mark and 5 questions of 2 marks each
General Awareness – 35 questions out of which 30 questions carried 1 mark and 5 questions of 2 marks each
Quant, DI & DS – 35 questions out of which 30 questions carried 1 mark and 5 questions of 2 marks each
Analytical & Logical Reasoning – all 30 questions were of 2 marks each 4 answer options for each question.
Negative Marks: 25% marks deducted for every wrong answer.

Highlights
1. The first five questions of each section carried two marks each. 2. Thought provoking questions in General Awareness. 3. Reasonably low key reasoning caselets in the Analytical and Logical Reasoning section. 4. A good spread of sitters in the QA & DI section. 5. A few tricky questions in the VA section.
Comment
This paper was intelligently constructed with a right mix of straight forward to tricky questions. A lot of common sense was required in selecting the questions as well in answering them.
The first five questions of three sections carried 2 marks and were of a higher difficulty than the ones that carried 1 mark each. A judicious move should have been to attempt the 1 mark questions first in order to gain an upper edge in number of attempts. Time permitting , the 2 mark questions should have been attempted later, thus minimizing loss through negative marking.
QUANTITATIVE ABILITY SECTION (QA & DI)
This section was of Average Difficulty. The two mark questions were time consuming but were not conceptually difficult.
The distribution of question types in the Quantitative Ability section was very similar to what was seen in the past SNAP papers. There was equal weightage on Algebra and Arithmetic but Geometry was left in the dark. There were no direct questions on numbers.
• Algebra – 9 questions.
• Arithmetic – 9 questions.
• Mathematical Reasoning – 1 question.
• Data Sufficiency – 2 questions.
• Number Series – 2 questions.
• Position and arrangement type – 1 question.
• Data Interpretation – 11 questions.
An approach that would have fetched you more marks would have been to solve the 1 mark questions first and then go back to the 2 mark ones.
A good score entails an attempt of 19-20 marks with around 75% accuracy. Hence, this would give you a score of 12+ marks in this section. This would suffice minimum score requirement in this section for the top three Symbiosis B-schools. ANALYTICAL And LOGICAL REASONING SECTION (AR & LR)
‘Common Sense’ was the key to this section. The Analytical Reasoning questions were easy. Logical Reasoning questions required careful reading. Overall, an average section.
Tackling the single questions which were abundant in number would have been the smartest move. These alone could have fetched you a good amount of quick marks.
A good score entails an attempt of 30-32 marks (15-16 marks) with around 75% accuracy. Hence, this would give you a score of 23 marks in this section. This would suffice minimum score requirement in this section for the top three Symbiosis B-schools.
THE GENERAL ENGLISH SECTION (VA)
The first five questions were a mixed bag. They were of average difficulty level, based mainly on idiomatic and grammatical usage. Though the reading passages had visual appeal due to their short length, but some of the questions were tricky.
• In the first five questions an attempt of 3 questions @ 2 marks gives you 6 marks
• In the remaining questions an attempt of 20 questions @ 1 mark gives you 20 marks
A good score entails an attempt of 24-26 marks with around 75% accuracy. Hence, this would give you a score of 16+ marks in this section. This would suffice minimum score requirement in this section for the top three Symbiosis B-schools.
GENERAL AWARENESS SECTION
Completely based on the awareness of the global corporate environment, the first five questions were tough.
Of the remaining 30 questions, a number of them could be solved with ease. For the Career Forum student the ‘Infodigest’ was worth its weight in gold.
A good score entails an attempt of 20+ marks with around 75% accuracy. Hence, this would give you a score of 12+ marks in this section. This would suffice minimum score requirement in this section for the top three Symbiosis B-schools
Cutoffs for different Symbiosis Institutes will vary greatly. However for the ambitious Symbiosis B-school aspirant an overall score of 80+ will be necessary to ‘aim for the stars’.
“iPod notesbog” (the iPod pad) is an iPod case with an integrated notepad. The brand new product is designed and produced by the Danish company Scripta.
The case is made of leather and features the notepad on one side and the holder for the iPod on the other side. There’s a hole for the earphones at the bottom and you will be able to access all the controls while your player sits safely inside the case.
This case manages a cool combination of not only being useful in more than one way, but in disguising your Nano. For most people it would just look like a notebook, but once you open it up there is a compartment to fit your Nano. The notebook part would be useful to either doodle or to make quick notes about things you need to remember for later. It’d be great for anyone that’s addicted to constantly taking notes for various reasons.
The outer part of the case is made of leather, which makes this notebook look even nicer. It also has a built-in hole to plug in your earbuds or a speaker. These come from a Danish company called Scripta. Hopefully they created the case so that it was easy to replace the notepad for when it has gotten too low. The notepads come in various color combinations, ranging from bright colors to black. It will fit the iPod Nano 3G and you can pick it up from Scripta for 139 DKK or about $27.
The iPod Case with Notepad is compatible with iPod Nano 3G (a 4G version will be out in January 2009).

.The Madras High Court today suspended its stay order and permitted screening of Aamir Khan-starrer Bollywood movie ‘Ghajini’, slated for release across the country tomorrow.
A single judge of the court yesterday put on hold the release of the film after a copyright violation suit was filed by the producer of the original Tamil version.
Conditionally suspending the order, a Division Bench comprising Justices V Dhanapalan and M Satyanarayanan directed M S Geetha Arts, a division of Ghajini’s producer Allu Entertainment Pvt Ltd, to deposit a sum of Rs five crore with the Court Registry.
I saw a fantastic Aamir Khan[Images] film the other night, one where his obsession with a pretty woman led to him being clubbed on the head with a generic looking rod. The blunt force trauma led to amnesia, or so claimed Khan’s character, leading to a wickedly fun plot, rife with both misunderstanding and subterfuge. Awesome stuff, Andaz Apna Apna.
Then, on Monday, I watched Ghajini[Images]. And an Andaz Apna Apnathis ain’t.
Before going into what it is, let us first dispense with the Memento talk.
The film’s makers have ludicrously attached a disclaimer that says that because their film’s protagonist suffers from a little-known medical disorder called anterograde amnesia, there is a likelihood that their story could feature elements common to other stories and films. Riight. Must be easy to be a specialist in the field then, a doctor who just needs to check the patient for a series of tattoos.
And while Ghajini might feature Aamir Khan going through the exact same condition Guy Pearce does in Memento yet — despite the tattoos, the polaroids, and the vengeful hero with a penchant for post-its — this is a pretty original desi picture, yes sir.
For director AR Murugadoss doesn’t take that ’story’ credit lightly: He’s taken the Memento plot, set its non-linearity into chronological order, taken out the actual investigative intrigue and replaced it with a series of convenient coincidences and — this one’s the clincher — added a full-blown backstory about how the hero met and fell in love with the murder victim, complete with a bunch of songs. It’s hard work making good masala, for God’s sake.
And Aamir Khan knows it well. It’s dubious as to just how much that body needed to be beefed up — heaven knows Guy Pearce didn’t resemble a steroid commercial — but Khan’s dedication is impressive, no question. As Sanjay Singhania, the killing machine dedicated to tracking down his lover’s killer, the actor plays a frenzied killing machine, clinical yet with a twisted, macabre fondness for gore. And he does really well.
His anterograde condition kicks in every fifteen minutes, which means he has to now restart investigation, scribble refreshed notes, and get back on track. And he’s very well-versed in habit; at a point when he’s suspicious despite having no self-scribbled clue to guide him, he analyses breathing patterns. It’s a role that requires much consternation — and Khan is truly wonderful when his character is bewildered — as well as much over-the-top, frothing at the mouth rage.
That would have been it for his job description had this been a standard, well-produced action movie, but there is a hardcore filmi romance smack bang in the middle of it all — one that has possibly a few minutes more screentime than the action section. And while Khan can still pour out the smitten-schoolboy charm at 43, the entire romantic part of the film is so depressingly obvious that it doesn’t work at all, and only serves in slowing down the momentum of what would be an entertaining action film.
A large part of this blame must be assigned to the leading lady. Granted, Asin is straddled with a character that begs the suffix -ine to be tagged onto her name, but a strong performance could certainly have salvaged this half of the film. Her Kalpana is one of those do-gooder heroines soaking in earnestness and sympathy, the kind of character that went out of style back when Juhi Chawla was a heroine, and it needed much verve to actually make this work. She doesn’t deliver — her chirpiness is most painful — and resultantly this rather stereotyped he’s-rich-she-doesn’t-know romance always seems underwhelming.
Even with the romance getting in the way, Murugadoss’ version of the amnesiac killer could have been a very compelling watch. There are times when they take huge departures from the original film, and the what-if possibilities are most intriguing. Until, you discover, that nothing is done about them. In a chilling scene, the villain’s goons strap Khan down and, after painting over his meticulously graffiti’d walls and his investigative charts, take out a tattoo gun and crudely rub out all his tattoos, the clues he’s investigated for so long.
This sets you up beautifully for a sequence where Khan discovers this, one where he wakes up to realise that all his investigations have been in vain. Does he even know he was investigating in the first place? And how does he feel waking up to see a body covered in hideously scratched out tattoos? It’s a trauma the character begs to be dealt with, but alas… the moment is ignored, possibly in favour of giving more time to the half-hour climax. Sigh.
This is a violent film, but there is no call for that besides shock. The gore seems gratituous — there is a tap scene bordering on the laughable — and while Khan leaps into his adversaries with an alarming intensity, somehow its hard to stomach a film where he stands in the middle of an alley and fells seven-with-one-blow. It is the kind of cinema we thought we’d seen the back of, and even if there’s nothing wrong with escapist mainstream masala, both audiences and Aamir seem a little less used to it.
Pradeep Rawat plays the titular villain with undisguised glee making up for thespian skills, and Jiah Khan glimpsed here after Nishabd, is actually quite decent in a character better written than that of the heroine. Unfortunately, the only time she does look super-hot (in white, in theLattoo song) is the one song where the director keeps cutting away to the action, darn it. The songs are completely extraneous narrative killers, but Rahman’s turned in a marvellous soundtrack and we’ll lap them up uncomplainingly.
Watch Ghajini, though. Watch it for Aamir Khan, because I don’t think I’ve seen him having this much fun as an actor in a very long time — and that’s always great to see. Not that I mean it’s as good as Teelu, of course.
The film itself is impressive in bits, with some terrific sequences, but the romance takes away its thunder. It is a breezy watch that could have been a really crackling one, and while there really is timepass fun to be had, the overwhelming feeling is one of regret.
For what can you say about a film on memory loss that turns out forgettable?

The 2008 assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir [Images] will be remembered for a host of reasons. Post 1996, it is the first election which has passed off peacefully, without any major untoward incident marring the process. In the wake of the election boycott call given by the separatists, the voter turnout, particularly in the conflict-ridden valley of Kashmir, has been much higher than expected.
There are certain aspects about this election that cannot be brushed aside. Even those who braved the bitter cold and waited for hours outside polling stations, reiterated that they were casting their vote for the development of the valley and that ‘Azaadi’ runs through their veins.
Over 1,354 candidates, including 468 independent candidates and 67 women contestants, are in the fray for the 87-member Assembly. As many as 1,354 candidates, including 78 from the Congress, 85 from the National Conference, 64 from the Bharatiya Janata Party and 78 from the People’s Democratic Party are contesting this time.
Total assets declared by the candidates, in their affidavits filed before the respective returning officers, sum up to a whopping Rs 7,769,012,944. The NC has the maximum number of crorepati candidates (33), followed by the PDP (18), the Congress (17) and the BJP (8).
The PDP is fielding a number of young candidates, with as many as 22 candidates below the age of 35. The NC, with 18 candidates below the age of 35, is at number two, followed by the BJP and Congress with 15 each.
The 2008 assembly election has also witnessed unprecedented participation by women — as voters and as candidates.
There were only 29 women candidates in the fray for the 2002 assembly elections. The number has more than doubled this time.
In 1972, four women candidates were elected to the state legislature, and that remains the highest number of women legislators in the state. The record is likely to change this time.
The PDP has fielded nine women contestants, followed by the BJP (5), the Congress (4), and the NC (2).
Like all other poll-bound states, J&K also has its share of candidates with criminal cases registered against them. The NC has fielded five such candidates, followed by the PDP (2), the BJP (2), and the Congress (1).

Tens of thousands of people flocked to Washington’s National Mall park on Sunday to begin celebrating the inauguration of Barack Obama with a two-hour concert while hoping to catch a glimpse of the nation’s next president.
The star-studded cast for the afternoon show in freezing temperatures and cloudy skies included Beyonce, Bono, Bruce Springsteen, and Stevie Wonder, but there was little doubt about the real star of the day.
Obama, 47, will be sworn in on Tuesday as the 44th president – and the first African American one – of the United States, but the party is getting off to an early start on Sunday afternoon with the concert at the Lincoln Memorial, the first of a series of events leading up to the presidential oath of office on the Capitol steps on Tuesday.
“I drove 18 hours to be in Washington for this historical event and wouldn’t miss it for anything because I didn’t think this would happen in my lifetime,” said Maxine Anderson, 45, an African American from New Orleans, Louisiana accompanied by her three sisters.
The revellers braving the cold weather chanting and hollering slogans and cheering Obama’s message of hope and change at a time when the country is facing its worst economic crisis in decades and a long list of challenges abroad, including wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
People started gathering early on Sunday morning along the reflective pools at the footsteps of the monument that enshrines Abraham Lincoln, the president who freed the slaves, and the spot where Martin Luther King Jr gave his famous “I have a dream” speech. The Mall was filled with jumbotron televisions, banners and news media booths, as well hundreds of blue and green portable toilets.
Euan Collins, a British tourist who arrived from his native Britain on Saturday night to join in on the festivities. He was among the many who came early to stake out their spots ahead of the concert.
“This is the American election, which has certainly touched Britain,” Collins, 28, said. “And you know I’m also in Washington for this bloody huge party.”
Earlier, Obama and vice president-elect Joe Biden placed a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington, after arriving on Saturday night following a train tour of stops to engage supporters in Philadelphia and Baltimore.
The concert foreshadows the inauguration ceremony at the Capitol building, which is expected to draw at least two million onlookers amid unprecedented security that was already being felt around Washington days ahead. But there were plenty at the Mall on Sunday ready to celebrate.
Delores Hardy, 68, of New Jersey, wanted to come so she could bring Obama’s message of hope back to her job at a detention facility for juvenile delinquents.
“Barack Obama really inspires me and enables me to bring hope to the kids at my centre,” she said. “I’m in Washington to see the fulfillment of Martin Luther King’s dream and carry this message to my kids.”
Alison Beck, a 34-year-old teacher who works in Britain, said she regretted not being in her native country on election night November 4, so she decided to make it back for the inauguration.
“Being out of the country for the election broke my heart and the inauguration gave me a reason to come home,” she said.
But not everyone was so optimistic about Obama future despite the world’s captivation with Obama, his wife Michelle and two young daughters Malia and Sasha.
“Obama’s been set up to fail,” said 43-year-old Brazilian Raoul Cota of the daunting challenges the president-elect will face when he moves into the White House and the frenzy surrounding his election begins to fade. “After Tuesday, once the love dies, he and the American people will face very real problems.”
Obama and his top aides have spent the two month since the election trying to build confidence with the public and carry the momentum from the election to the Oval Office and begin quickly on tackling the recession that wiped out nearly two million jobs last year.
Obama wants lawmakers to authorize more than $800 billion in spending on infrastructure and other projects he says can create up to three million jobs and pull the economy out of the crisis.
“Getting this economy moving again is absolutely paramount,” David Axelrod, a senior Obama adviser, said on CNN. “And so he is going to continue to work on that.”
Obama will also be trying to fulfil a campaign promise to end the war in Iraq and intensify US efforts against the Taliban in Afghanistan, but will also be dealing with a Middle East peace process shattered after three weeks of fighting between Israel and Palestinian Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.
Israel on Saturday declared a unilateral ceasefire in the conflict that has taken more than 1,000 Palestinian lives. Hamas announced a one-week truce on Sunday.
Obama has mostly kept quiet on the fighting, not wanting to break of pledge of “one president at a time” by weighting into international issues while President George W Bush is still in office.
“All of us are hopeful that a cessation of violence will hold,” Axelrod said, adding Obama will move quickly to diplomatically address international challenges.
“He intends to engage early and aggressively with diplomacy all over the world,” Axelrod said on CNN.
The free two-hour concert on Sunday afternoon will formally welcome Obama to Washington. On Monday, Obama, along with former secretary of state Colin Powell, will be issuing a national “call to service.”
During the train tour, Obama said the challenges he’s facing – the falling economy, two wars and global warming – were “different, but severe in their own right,” calling on the country to unite in confronting the problems.
“The events of the next several days are not simply about the inauguration of an American president,” Obama said on Saturday. “They will be a celebration of the American people.”
‘What I Want for You — and Every Child in America’
Next Tuesday, Barack Obama will be sworn in as our 44th President. On this historic occasion, PARADE asked the President-elect, who is also a devoted family man, to get personal and tell us what he wants for his children. Here, he shares his letter to them.
Parade Magazine has posted an open letter written by Barack Obama to his daughters Sasha and Malia. Here are a few excerpts; the full letter is available at Parade.com, and the print version is available from the January 18th issue. See if you can get through it without tearing up a little.
Letter goes like this,
Dear Malia and Sasha,
I know that you’ve both had a lot of fun these last two years on the campaign trail, going to picnics and parades and state fairs, eating all sorts of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn’t have let you have. But I also know that it hasn’t always been easy for you and Mom, and that as excited as you both are about that new puppy, it doesn’t make up for all the time we’ve been apart. I know how much I’ve missed these past two years, and today I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey.
When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me-about how I’d make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with all your curiosity and mischief and those smiles that never fail to fill my heart and light up my day. And suddenly, all my big plans for myself didn’t seem so important anymore. I soon found that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours. And I realized that my own life wouldn’t count for much unless I was able to ensure that you had every opportunity for happiness and fulfillment in yours. In the end, girls, that’s why I ran for President: because of what I want for you and for every child in this nation.
I want all our children to go to schools worthy of their potential-schools that challenge them, inspire them, and instill in them a sense of wonder about the world around them. I want them to have the chance to go to college-even if their parents aren’t rich. And I want them to get good jobs: jobs that pay well and give them benefits like health care, jobs that let them spend time with their own kids and retire with dignity.
Sasha (l) and Malia Obama at play in New Hampshire in 2007.
I want us to push the boundaries of discovery so that you’ll live to see new technologies and inventions that improve our lives and make our planet cleaner and safer. And I want us to push our own human boundaries to reach beyond the divides of race and region, gender and religion that keep us from seeing the best in each other.
Sometimes we have to send our young men and women into war and other dangerous situations to protect our country-but when we do, I want to make sure that it is only for a very good reason, that we try our best to settle our differences with others peacefully, and that we do everything possible to keep our servicemen and women safe. And I want every child to understand that the blessings these brave Americans fight for are not free-that with the great privilege of being a citizen of this nation comes great responsibility.
That was the lesson your grandmother tried to teach me when I was your age, reading me the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and telling me about the men and women who marched for equality because they believed those words put to paper two centuries ago should mean something.
She helped me understand that America is great not because it is perfect but because it can always be made better-and that the unfinished work of perfecting our union falls to each of us. It’s a charge we pass on to our children, coming closer with each new generation to what we know America should be.
Bumper cars at the Iowa State Fair in August 2007.
I hope both of you will take up that work, righting the wrongs that you see and working to give others the chances you’ve had. Not just because you have an obligation to give something back to this country that has given our family so much-although you do have that obligation. But because you have an obligation to yourself. Because it is only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you will realize your true potential.
These are the things I want for you-to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive that you girls have. That’s why I’ve taken our family on this great adventure.
I am so proud of both of you. I love you more than you can ever know. And I am grateful every day for your patience, poise, grace, and humor as we prepare to start our new life together in the White House.

The stupendous success of his Hindi ‘Ghajini’ has made A.R. Murugadoss as costly as Shankar, the ultimate showman in Kollywood. The latter gets Rs 10 crore per film, say industry insiders.
Murugadoss has directed just three films — ‘Dheena’, ‘Ramanaa’ and ‘Ghajini’—before he stepped onto Bollywood.
Aamir Khan, who played the lead in the Hindi version of ‘Ghajini’, has reportedly met the director after the film became a success and gave him a part of the profit.
The diminutive young director has fixed a fee of Rs 10 crore for his next film, a Shah Rukh Khan starrer, it is said. He is already getting requests from Bollywood actresses to cast them opposite King Khan.

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal has confirmed his place at the pinnacle of men’s tennis following a classic five-set victory over world No. 2 Roger Federer in the final of Australian Open 2009.
It was a battle worthy of a major final, and the world’s top two players put on a memorable performance before the Spaniard triumphed 7-5 3-6 7-6(3) 3-6 6-2 after four hours and 23 minutes on court.
It is the third time in the last four Grand Slam events that Nadal and Federer have played the championship match, and again it was Nadal who emerged triumphant, winning his first Australian Open title.
Despite vastly greater experience playing in the latter stages of the tournament at Melbourne Park, Federer began nervously, throwing in a double-fault and shanking two backhands to be broken immediately.
He quickly erased Nadal’s advantage in the next game, winning a torrid battle that featured several game and break points before tying scores at 1-1.
The two men seemed to settle into the contest from that point, trading service holds. This changed in the sixth game, however, when Federer cranked up his game and broke serve following two forehand winners, moving ahead 4-2.
Nadal returned the favour in the next game, playing two spectacular running winners to bring up break point before a Federer double fault got the match back on serve.
Games went on serve until the 11th game, in which Nadal produced a deft drop shot winner and forehand pass to go up 6-5. He served out the set in the next game after nearly an hour of play.
Games comfortably progressed on serve early in the second set until Federer had a chance to break in the fourth game. He would rue being unable to convert this opportunity – the Spaniard held serve and then subsequently broke thanks to a series of cracking backhand winners.
But instead of carrying on with his momentum, Nadal folded, gifting Federer the break back with a double fault and an error.
Federer lifted his intensity and found the range on his groundstrokes, winning four straight games to tie proceedings at one set apiece. The decisive break came in the eighth game, in which both players displayed superb shot-making before Federer finally converted his fifth break point.
Despite now being in the driver’s seat and winning the second set relatively comfortably, things weren’t all going the Swiss champion’s way. He was wasteful in converting break points, and his first serve percentage was languishing below 50 per cent.
The latter statistic was exposed when he found himself in trouble on serve in the sixth game of the third set. Despite facing break point, he hit out bravely from the baseline to level scores at 3-3.
The former was on show in the ninth and 11th games. Federer played sublime tennis to conjure up bundles of break points – six in all across the two games – but was unable to convert any.
It was Federer’s set to win, and his inability to take advantage of his chances would cost him dearly. The fact that Nadal twice had treatment for a cramping thigh during the set further highlighted a missed opportunity.
The set progressed to a tiebreak, with the Spaniard reaching three set points after playing a lovely angled volley to end a breathtaking point. He duly converted on his first to take a two-sets-to-one lead.
Holding in the opening game of the fourth, Federer took the upper hand by breaking in the next to lead 2-0. Nadal was not discouraged, breaking back immediately to put the pressure right back on his illustrious opponent.
But the effects of the Spaniard’s five-set marathon against Fernando Verdasco in Friday night’s semifinal were becoming visible. Federer noticed his opponent fatiguing, and in what would turn out to be an epic fifth game, he tested Nadal’s movement with several sneaky drop shots.
Nadal struggled to chase these down, but still managed to bring up five break points in a game that featured scintillating baseline rallies, all areas of the court utilised, and a whopping seven deuces. Like Federer earlier in the match, Nadal could not convert, allowing the Swiss to level at 3-3.
It proved a telling service hold – Federer went on to win the next three games against his increasingly deflated opponent to take the match into a fifth set.
But where you thought the No. 2 seed would use this momentum to stamp his authority on the match, Nadal mustered incredible mental and physical energy to gain a break in the fourth game.
Federer, somewhat bizarrely, went walkabout – his game descended in
